This Distinguished Panel considers the legacy of Phillis Wheatley, the first Black woman to publish in the United States. Celebrating the 250th anniversary of Wheatley's Poems, Dr. Tara Bynum (University of Iowa), Dr. Brigitte Fielder (University of Wisconsin-Madison), and Dr. Cassander Smith (University of Alabama) also explore what her history means for the future of African American and American studies. Introductions by Early American Literature Editor Dr. Marion Rust, with Panel Response by Dr. Nazera Wright.
