Dr. Chilcote-Fricker is a bioarchaeologist specializing in the examination of skeletal markers of bone growth and maintenance, and activity-related stress. Her research interests focus on the embodiment of social processes via skeletal plasticity, activity patterns and the interplay between lifecourse and social identities. She pursues these interests by investigating how the human body represents a contextually dependent materiality that can illuminate information about the connection between an individual, the different stages of their life and identity(s), and reveal how they were situated within the context of the larger society in which they existed. Additionally she is the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Coordinator for UK spearheading the repatriation effort at the William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology.
Chaka Cummings is the inaugural Executive Director of the Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky, an organization formed in partnership through Berea College, Kentucky State University, The Muhammad Ali Center, and the Thomas D. Join us for a presentation and conversation with Lea Whitehurst Gibson a community organizer with 20 years of experience equipping communities with sustainable tools and resources so they can build and maintain positive community change.
Lea Whitehurst Gibson is the Founder and CEO of Virginia Community Voice, a 501c3 nonprofit located in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia Community Voice’s mission is to equip neighbors in historically marginalized communities to realize their vision for their neighborhoods and prepare institutions to respond effectively. Lea is a seasoned community organizer who trains institutions in equity-driven community engagement that ultimately centers the voices of community members at all steps, from project inception to implementation.
The panelists will discuss opportunities and challenges facing the Latino community in Kentucky with a focus on education and health. Additionally, they will discuss strategies and initiatives to foster collaboration among organizations, institutions, and individuals who are dedicated to recognizing and promoting the Latino heritage in the Commonwealth.
