Diversity Statement Workshop (for Academic Job Applications)

Workshop on Creating a Diversity Statement for the Academic Job Search

Summer 2022

The Working Group on Ethics, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice in the Mathematical Sciences (EEIJMS) is hosting a workshop on writing a diversity statement for academic job applications for graduate students and others entering the job market, organized by Ben Braun, Courtney George, Cindy Jong, David Murrugarra, and Chloe Urbanski Wawrzyniak

When: 2:30-4 pm on Monday, August 15

Where: Whitehall Classroom Building 234

In this workshop, you will

  • Learn about common vocabulary and context for diversity statements

  • Reflect on your own work and experiences to include in your statement

  • Discuss the goals and structure of many diversity statements

  • Learn about common pitfalls by comparing and critiquing sample statements

Although the workshop is designed with advanced graduate students in the mathematical sciences in mind, anyone who might find the material useful is welcome to attend, including junior graduate students and faculty advisors. We hope that all participants will find the workshop helpful, whether you’ve already written a draft statement or you haven’t begun thinking about it yet.

If you plan to attend, please register here: https://forms.gle/jRZ8uoVZw7ZNyHKP8

We recommend bringing a copy of your CV with you to the workshop. This will help during workshop activities as you reflect on your experiences and craft your statement.
