General:
The Women in STEM Lunch and Learn series is where the female faculty members from UKY and female executive from industry have an interactive session with graduate and undergraduate students. This event would be an excellent opportunity for students to learn about various aspects of graduate school/academia, life-work balance, or simply to network. Additionally, we plan to have a speaker from minority/underrepresented community to talk about the importance of carrying the right attitude and mindset to have a successful career. Also, we plan to share information on scholarships/funding available for underrepresented communities and women in STEM for better utility among students.
Specifically for March 10th event:
Our guest speaker is Dr. Diana Sama.
Biography:
Diana Sama, PhD, completed her graduate and postdoctoral training at UK in biomedical neuroscience, focusing on brain aging and traumatic brain injury. She developed an interest in science communication during her training, and that interest grew into a career in research development. She has worked in the UK Proposal Development Officer (PDO) since 2017. In her current role, she provides support to UK faculty, staff, and students as they pursue funding for their research and scholarly activities across all sponsors and mechanisms. She enjoys reading about science every day while helping to advance UK’s research program.

Self- recovery meetings are for students who are in or seeking recovery from drug and alcohol misuse. We also welcome students in recovery from other institutions as well as anyone interested in learning more about recovery. The Collegiate Recovery Community at the University of Kentucky uses SMART Recovery which focuses on building motivation, coping with urges, managing behaviors, as well as providing the resources necessary for individuals to live a balanced life
This is a 2 Day certification process that is required in order to become a WSD sitter. Sitters watch the dogs when trainers need help, and are able to handle the dogs in public. Our sitters make up the bulk of our membership, and are incredibly valuable to our dogs' training. Everyone is required to be a sitter for at least one semester, and can then be eligible to run for an officer position and/or become a trainer. Only UK students are eligible to become WSD sitters.
Day 1 (Feb. 25) 10am-1pm will be a policy & handling class led by WSD leadership. This is where you will learn about our organization's policies, how we handle our service dogs in training, and will have the opportunity to practice handling one of the dogs yourself!
Day 2 (Feb. 26) will consist of a brief multiple choice evaluation, as well as a working evaluation handling one of the dogs. A minimum of 80% on each portion of the evaluation is required to become a sitter for Wildcat Service Dogs. You are not required to be there for the full 10am-1pm time, that is just the window of when you can show up to evaluate. Once your evaluation is complete, you are set to go!
