Elevating the Stories of Black Women: Dr. Virginia Alexander and Shirley Chisholm

JOIN US for conversation with Dr. Vanessa Northington Gamble and Dr Anastasia Curwood about the lives of Dr. Virginia Alexander and Shirley Chrisholm, their experiences as biographers, and the importance of telling Black women's stories. Refreshments with be from 5-5:30 PM | Discussion will be 5:30-6:30 PM

The University of Kentucky Center for Health Equity Transformation is hosting this next event in its 2022-2023 Elevating Equity Speaker Series, co-sponsored by Anthem BlueCross and BlueShield Medicaid, the Gaines Center for the Humanities, and the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies. 

We are hosting this event in the evening at an off-campus location in the hope that we will be able to engage the broader Lexington community.

Let's Talk About Black Women Experiences with Healthcare

A healthcare professional panel that will discuss and address the health disparities that exist for women of color within the healthcare field in both the roles as a patient and being a provider. This event will have a panel featuring healthcare providers from different fields. This panel is open to both pre-health students and students navigating the healthcare system as patients! We will address the health disparities that exist for women of color and discuss the role that health professionals play!

UK Koru encourages students to participate in a weekly demonstration that introduce mindfulness techniques learned in the KORU Basic Course. If you enjoy the demonstrations, feel free to sign up for our KORU Basic Course and explore the practice of paying attention to whatever is happening in the moment, with curiosity and kindness.

Here are the list of mindfulness techniques that will be introduced and practiced along with the corresponding dates:

March 7th & April 4th - Teaching Mindfulness Lesson

March 14th & April 11th - Belly Breathing

March 21st & April 18th - Opening Meditation

March 28th & April 25th - Guided Imagery

May 2nd - Labeling Thoughts
